Dental insurance helps you save money on dental procedures, provides access to quality dental care and protects your health and budget from unexpected issues.

Shopping for dental insurance can seem overwhelming, but it's not so bad when you start assessing your needs to match the coverage options available to you.

Assess your needs

How is your current oral health? Are you planning for any major dental work to be done? Are you not concerned about anything and only looking preventive care coverage? Answering these questions will help determine which plans will are best for you.

A low-cost preventive focused dental plan works great for people that only need regular cleanings and an occasional filling. If more major dental work is on the horizon, shop higher coverage plans to help cover more of the cost.

Understanding different dental plan types

PPO

PPO dental plans have a large network of dentists who have agreed to provide services at discounted rates to plan members. You'll have the flexibility to choose any dentist, but you'll typically save more if you visit an in-network provider.

HMO

HMO dental plans have a network of dentists who provide services to plan members at predetermined rates. You must select a primary care dentist from the network and obtain referrals from them to see specialists.

Indemnity

Indemnity plans allow you to choose any dentist without restrictions, as they reimburse a percentage of the dentist's fee for covered services. These plans tend to have higher premiums.

Take advantage of provider networks

If you're shopping a PPO plan, like Magnum, check to see if the dentist you see if listed in-network. See a dentist in-network within the Ameritas Dental Network for Magnum plans can save you 25-50% on all covered services!

Review costs and benefits

Premium: You pay this portion of the plan on a monthly basis. You’ll see that the premium is lower for less benefits and higher for plans offering more comprehensive coverage.

Deductible: This is the amount you'll pay before your benefits are activated.

Coinsurance: Coinsurance splits the costs with you—you'll pay a portion and your dental plan will cover the rest helping you lower out-of-pocket costs for dental services.

Annual max: This is the total amount your dental plan will cover within a year.
